STREAM Academy - Free Cyber Charter School Opens To Students
Innovative new K-12 school offers free traditional online courses with unique "On-Location" learning - first of its kind in the region.
Pittsburgh, PA /PRNewswire/ - Starting today, the AIU's new STREAM Academy, is accepting students interested in attending a dynamic K- 12 cyber charter school where courses focus on Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Students can enroll immediately at StreamAcademy.org.
The first of its kind in southwestern PA, and possibly the state, STREAM Academy is innovative, combining the best of traditional cyber charter school courses with innovative and dynamic"On-Location" learning opportunities with business and industry experts at some of region's top companies. Students will have their choice of six focus areas, called tributaries, which will prepare them for careers in the 21st century global economy.
By stressing projected-based learning, students will have the chance to explore real world problems and learn the critical thinking skills necessary to become tomorrow's innovators. Through career-related experiences, students will be prepared to excel in the workforce and contribute to a strong, competitive economy.
At its official launch on Tuesday, Dr. Linda Hippert, Executive Director of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, said that it is vital that education leaders partner with business and industry to meet current and future workforce needs.
"STREAM Academy will uniquely prepare students for the world of tomorrow and has the potential to contribute greatly to the region's workforce. We will welcome partners," she said.
Unlike most charter schools, STREAM Academy will be governed by a board of directors comprised of superintendents and educators from Allegheny County school districts, and overseen by a board of credentialed, public educators. The transition to STREAM will be complete by the 2012-2013 school year, and the academy will hold its first graduation in the spring of 2016.
