6 Yuma District One Schools Acknowledged For Receiving 2016 PBISaz Achievement Award

Congratulating selected schools at Yuma School District One for earning the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award. A total of 68 schools in Arizona earned this award which recognizes schools for successful implementation and outcomes with School-Wide Systems of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS).

The PBISaz Achievement Award recognizes schools for successful implementation and outcomes with School-Wide Systems of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS). Award criteria requires high fidelity scores on national evaluation assessments AND measurable student outcome data.

District One is proud to acknowledge the following schools for being 6 out of the 68 awards in Arizona to earn a 2016 PBISaz Achievement Award.

• O.C. Johnson Elementary School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award
• Roosevelt Elementary School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award
• R. Pete Woodard Jr. High School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award
• Pecan Grove Elementary School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award
• Gila Vista Jr. High School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award
• C.W. McGraw Elementary School earned the Merit PBISaz Achievement Award

Principal Sofia Ramirez at Roosevelt Elementary notes, “PBIS has helped us narrow down our rules and procedures inside and outside of the classroom and focus more on what we can do as educators to promote positive behavior. PBIS helps equip teachers and administrators with knowledge of specific practices and choose better approaches to create a better school culture among all stakeholders.”

PBIS focuses on recognizing students as they are coming into the classroom by standing outside the door and greeting them. Promoting Positive Character Traits by posting student’s names on a bulletin board and celebrating students along with parents each month during a special award night. These types of methods help build clear and consistent rules and procedures school-wide.

Dr. Thad Dugan, Principal at Gila Vista Jr. High says, “Since the implementation of PBIS at Gila Vista the students and staff are becoming more aware of the expectations set forth through the PRIDE logo. The teachers are referring to these in the classroom and around campus daily. The decrease in discipline referrals is also evident from last year to the numbers that are being seen this year. The discipline rate has dropped by 52%, correlating to the TIC percentage that is increasing and we are working as a community at Gila Vista to continue with this positive direction.”
