North Seattle Community College Brings Developmental Math Online With Academic Systems

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PLATO Learning, Inc. (NASDAQ: TUTR), a leading provider of computer-based and e-learning solutions, announced that North Seattle Community College (NSCC) will continue its 10-year partnership with PLATO Learning by transitioning to the company's newest online software for post-secondary—Academic Systems Algebra—to support the college's developmental mathematics courses. The mathematics series provides students at the Seattle, Wash., college with greater opportunities to understand, master, and apply the principles of algebra in a flexible, self-paced, and anytime/anywhere online format.

"We are thrilled with the possibilities that the Academic Systems Algebra solution affords us," said Denise Brannan, mathematics instructor for NSCC. "It was time to upgrade our capabilities, and our new computer-based and distance learning programs provide our students the flexibility to take lecture or online-courses, enroll full- or part-time, and excel at their own pace. As a result, our students are succeeding in ways they were previously unable."

NSCC proactively responded to students' changing needs—including greater accessibility and schedule flexibility—by creating both distance learning and hybrid programs using Academic Systems Algebra. And since spring 2008, NSCC has utilized Academic Systems Algebra to instruct more than 200 students enrolled in basic, elementary, and intermediate algebra courses.

A PLATO Learning partner since 1997, NSCC continues to see improved student pass rates, retention, and persistence across all of its college courses. "The students we have at our school are here because they want to grow," Brannan said. "Our developmental math programs provide students with multiple opportunities to build the foundational mathematics skills they need to persist and succeed in more advanced courses."

"Academic Systems Algebra has been designed to help students master vital mathematics principles and skills that will help them complete the rest of their college studies," said Mike Morache, PLATO Learning president and CEO. "We are delighted to be part of NSCC's transition to offer flexible and powerful online learning courses."
